An Audi R8 sports car caught fire just before entering the basement carpark at the Singapore Botanic Garden on Nov 27.

Stomper Eric shared dashcam video showing the moment when the vehicle burst into flames and stopped in the middle of the road.

"Fortunately, a female passenger and the male driver managed to get out of the car," said the Stomper.

The driver then appeared to be using his phone to take a video of the vehicle as more and more smoke rose from it.

Singer-songwriter Mark Chan shared on Facebook a photo taken from a distance of the smoke billowing from behind the treeline with the caption: "Oh dear, there's a fire across the road in the Botanic Gardens."

In response to a Stomp query, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted on Nov 27 at about 2:15pm to a car fire near 1 Cluny Road.

The fire was extinguished by SCDF using a water jet and a compressed air foam jet.

There were no reported injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Singapore Botanic Gardens announced on its website that the Botany Centre’s carpark has resumed operations at 5am on Nov 29 after repair works were carried out.
