9 men, aged between 53 and 80, nabbed for illegal betting activities

Nine men, aged between 53 and 80, were arrested for their suspected involvement in illegal betting activities during an enforcement operation on Sunday (Oct 25).

The enforcement operation was conducted by Woodlands Police Division along Yishun Avenue 5.

"All nine individuals were arrested for offences under the Betting Act," said the police in a statement.

Cash amounting to more than $1,700, two handphones and gambling paraphernalia were seized as case exhibits.

Police investigations are ongoing.

Under the Betting Act, any person who bets with a bookmaker shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $5,000, or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months, or both.

Any person who is found to be involved in bookmaking shall be liable on conviction to a fine of not less than $20,000 and not more than $200,000, and shall also be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years.

The police added in the statement that they will continue to clamp down on criminal activities, including illegal gambling.

"Those found engaging in illicit activities will be dealt with sternly in accordance with the law," said the police.
