Woman gets screamed at for asking why Tampines stall charged her 'shocking' $5.30 for nasi lemak

Was it an overreaction?

A woman alleged that she was screamed at by a stall vendor after asking why she had been charged so much for her meal and told not to return.

Facebook user Kelly Liu said she had visited the Ahjuma Econ Bee Hoon stall at Our Tampines Hub's hawker centre on Friday morning (Oct 13) to buy nasi lemak for her father.

She recounted in a post on Friday night: "This economical stall is not economical after all. I ordered takeaway nasi lemak add rice with chicken wing and sausage as ingredients, I was charged a shocking $5.30."

The price included $0.30 for the takeaway box.

Liu added: "I questioned the middle-aged lady why was it so expensive? She just screamed at me, and said if you think it is expensive don't come again!

"This is my first and last time visiting this stall. Please beware of this overcharging and bad attitude auntie."

Many netizens sided with Liu, with one commenting: "I think we do have right to ask why is it so expensive."

Some also noted an emerging trend of mediocre food that do not justify their high prices at local F&B establishments.

One user said: "Seriously the way hawkers anyhow charge is getting outta hand."

Another added: "I'm getting sick of the F&B culture in SG - expensive food, low quality, most of the time small quantity and very often rude staff."

And judging by similar reports on Stomp, Liu and these netizens definitely aren't alone.
