This is why you should not leave your cooking unattended.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to a fire at Block 593B Montreal Link in Sembawang on Sunday (Aug 20) at 1.20pm.

Sharing a video of SCDF vehicles near the block, a Stomper said: "Someone left home without switching off the gas on the seventh storey."

Deploying the combined platform ladder with its outriggers (the four spider-like "legs" protruding from the fire engine), firefighters were able to access the flat through a window at the side of the block from the aerial platform.

In response to a Stomp query, SCDF said the fire involved a gas stove in the kitchen.

The fire was extinguished by shutting off the gas stove. There were no reported injuries.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the fire is likely to have been caused by unattended cooking.

SCDF would like to highlight some good practices to adopt to prevent cooking fires:

  • Never leave cooking unattended.
  • Keep flammable items away from the heat source.
  • Keep surfaces and kitchen hood clean.

In the event of an oil fire:

  • Do not pour water into the cookware.
  • Turn off the gas supply immediately.
  • Use a lid or a wet cloth to cover the cookware.
  • Call 995 for SCDF assistance if the fire goes out of control.
