Kind man pays for elderly woman's groceries when her card fails in Australia

A man from Wyoming, Australia, was lauded for generously paying for an elderly lady’s groceries when her card failed.

In a tweet posted on Tuesday (Feb 28), the man’s kind act was captured on camera and has since been retweeted over 200 times..

According to Australian news show TODAY, the man was Ryan O’Donnell.

He was with his two children at the Wyoming branch of supermarket Coles when he noticed the elderly lady in front of him was having troubles making payment.

Her card was denied repeatedly and she went to the customer service desk for assistance. After Mr O’Donnell had made his purchases, he handed A$50 (S$53.90) to the cashier to cover the lady’s expenses as well.

“And (the cashier) said, look, it's like $44 or something and her card kept being declined, due to insufficient funds. I said here is $50, just take it out of that," he said.

After he had helped the lady make the purchase, she asked him how she could repay him. However, the 34-year-old declined her offer.

Mr O’Donnell said: "She reminded me of my nan or grandma. I just could not walk away. That's how my mum and dad brought me up."
