Inspiring Teachers Awards: Mr Waylen Tan made a lifetime impact on me and is a cut above the rest

Even though Chloe had Mr Waylen Tan as her teacher for only one year in 2017, he is someone whom she will remember for a lifetime.

Chloe, who scored well for her school subjects and emerged second in class, credits Mr Tan for her academic success.

Here is Chloe's entry for the Samsung-Stomp Inspiring Teachers Awards:

"I am privileged to have been taught by many passionate and dedicated teachers over the past four and a half years in Xinmin Primary School, yet Mr Waylen Tan still stands out as a cut above the rest.

"I would like to make use of this opportunity through the Samsung-Stomp Inspiring Teachers Awards to express my heartfelt gratitude to Mr Waylen Tan, as well as to mention how this extraordinary teacher inspires me.

"Last year, when I was in Primary Four, a crucial year for us due to it being a Subject Base Banding year, our class was fortunate to have a responsible teacher, Mr Waylen Tan, as our form teacher as well as the subject teacher for English and Mathematics.

"He has never failed to impact his knowledge on to us. Under his guidance, my mathematics improved tremendously.

"Mr Tan specially made arrangements for students who were weak on certain topics to stay back after school, so that he could reinforce his lessons and provide additional help to us. I was one of the recipients.

"I enjoyed Mr Tan's English lessons, especially composition writing. He taught us the 'Show Not Tell' technique so that our composition would be creative and interesting to read.

"I am proud to announce that till now, I still remember it and I make good use of his teaching technique in my composition writing.

"Being an approachable and motivated teacher, he would patiently clear any doubts that I encountered in the course of my studies.

"Mr Tan also motivated me by asking me to be meticulous in my work, especially during the examinations, and encouraged me to achieve Band 1 for all subjects.

"True enough, under his guidance, I scored very well with Four Band 1s last year. Not only that, I was ranked second in class.

"I am in Primary Five this year, so occasionally I will still see Mr Tan in school. I always greet him and put on a BIG smile whenever I see him.

"If he is not rushing to his next lesson, we will have a short conversation and he will check on my work progress. And if I face any problems in my studies, he will still teach me selflessly. He is just like a father to me.

"To be honest, no words can convey my appreciation for all the hard work that Mr Tan has done. As such, I would like to thank Mr Tan for making such a great impact and impression on me. They will last me for a lifetime."
