Arrested: E-bike rider suspected of hit-and-run that led to death of 78-year-old man

A 49-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run accident along Jalan Bukit Merah on Aug 17 that resulted in the death of a 78-year-old man.

The pedestrian, Mr Song Chee Keong, was hit by a Power-Assisted Bicycle (PAB) at around 6.34pm outside a McDonald's restaurant and sustained severe head injuries.

The PAB rider left the scene of the accident before the police arrived.

Mr Song later died of his injuries in hospital on Saturday (Aug 19).

The police appealed to eyewitnesses to come forward if they had any information and released a photo of the suspect on Monday (Aug 21).

The police said the man was arrested for causing death by a rash act, reports The Straits Times.

The maximum punishment for causing death by a rash act is five years' jail and a fine.

Police investigations are ongoing.
