Car knocks down deer along BKE, causes heavy jam

A sambar deer was hit by a car along the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE) towards Woodlands on Thursday evening (Aug 25).

Stomper Watson alerted Stomp to the incident and shared footage he took from his in-car camera.

In the video, cars are seen slowing down and moving to avoid the deer lying on the second lane of the expressway.

According to Watson, the incident caused a heavy jam.

In response to a Stomp query, Acres' deputy chief executive officer, Mr Kalai Vanan shared with Stomp that they were alerted to the accident at about 10pm.

"Unfortunately, the team were stuck handling several other cases," Mr Kalai said.

"We understand that the public had contacted NParks as an alternative and they had attended to the case. 

"This particular area has been known for the presence of these deer.

"This unfortunate animal likely ventured too near to a residential area by mistake, panicked and tried to cross the expressway.

"We hope that the motorists involved did not sustain any injuries."

The sambar (Rusa unicolor) deer is one of the largest deer species in the world, after the moose and the elk. 

It is estimated that there are fewer than 20 of them in Singapore. They are classified as a vulnerable species.
