Woman and man arrested for separate cases of loanshark harassment at Jurong West and Canberra

A 26-year-old woman and a 36-year-old man have been arrested for their suspected involvement in two separate cases of loanshark harassment.

The police said in a statement that they were alerted to the two cases on Mar 18.

In the first, a residential unit at Jurong West Street 52 was splashed with red paint.

In the second, a debtor's note was pasted on the main gate of a unit at Canberra Street.

The woman was identified and arrested on the same day. Preliminary investigations revealed that she is believed to be involved in cases of loanshark harassment at four other units.

The police identified the man and arrested him within six hours of the report. He is believed to be involved in a similar case at Teban Gardens Road.

They will be charged in court on Mar 20 under the Moneylenders Act.

Those found guilty of loanshark harassment can be fined between $5,000 and $50,000, jailed for up to five years, and caned up to six strokes.

Members of the public are advised to stay away from loansharks and not work with or assist them in any way.

Call the police at '999' or the X-Ah Long hotline at 1800-924-5664 if you suspect or know of anyone who could be involved in loansharking activities.
