A driver was puzzled when he saw a cyclist riding along the West Coast Highway on Jan 11.

Stomper Lenard was driving along the expressway towards the city at about 8.10am when he saw the cyclist riding in the left-most lane.

"Why is this cyclist cycling on the expressway?" he asked.

The West Coast Highway is not listed as an expressway on which road cyclists are prohibited from riding on.

While cyclists are allowed on roads, it is illegal for them to ride on expressways and in road tunnels.

Cyclists caught flouting traffic rules will have to pay a $150 fine.

For more serious cases, a cyclist may be charged in court and fined up to $1,000 as well as jailed for up to three months for the first offence.

Repeat offenders can be fined up to $2,000 and/or jailed for up to six months.
