Teen, 15, who struck Sengkang resident with metal rod and hurled vulgarities to be charged

A 15-year-old male teenager will be charged on March 27 for allegedly assaulting a woman in an unprovoked attack in Sengkang.

In an earlier report, the 58-year-old woman said she had encountered a group of teenagers on a personal mobility device (PMD) in Fernvale Lane in the wee hours of March 22, at around 5.30am.

She recounted: "One person hit my left buttock with a 20cm to 30cm object resembling a metal rod. I felt severe pain and was shocked."

The police said they received a report about the assault on March 22, at around 12pm.

"While the victim was walking along Fernvale Lane, an unknown assailant allegedly struck her back with a metal rod and hurled vulgarities at her," police added. "As a result, the victim suffered minor injuries."

Preliminary investigations revealed that the attack was unprovoked.

Through the aid of images from police cameras, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division established the assailant's identity. He was subsequently arrested on March 25.

The teen will be charged in court with voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapon, which carries a jail term of up to seven years and/or a fine and/or caning.

The police said they have zero tolerance towards such brazen acts of violence and will not hesitate to act against those who blatantly disregard the law.
