No more extensions.

All Turf City tenants are to move out by the end of the year.

That includes The Cage, a popular venue for enthusiasts of various sports, including football.

The last seven-a-side football tournament was held at the Bukit Timah location this past weekend on Dec 17.

"It was called The Final Cup." said Stomper Jonathan, who was one of the organisers.

"There were 20 invited teams to play and these were teams that played regularly at Turf City."

"There were tears, joy and laughter," said the Stomper. "It was a bittersweet goodbye."

He called it the end of an era.

"The sports fraternity in Singapore needs a venue like Turf City. Sports like soccer, rugby, cricket, netball, basketball, tennis are all in one place. To take it away without making other venues available is not right."

The Cage, which also operates in Kallang, announced on Facebook in November that construction has started on a new venue in Dempsey.

"If all goes well, we should be opening just before February 2024," said the Facebook post.

Since 2019, Turf City tenants have been reminded by the Singapore Land Authority of the need to vacate the site due to future development plans and were given two successive 18-month tenancy extensions up to Dec 31, 2023, to allow more time for tenants to firm up their transition and winding down plans.

No further extensions will be granted as the Turf City site is required for future residential development.

The Land Transport Authority had also announced that Turf City will be the site of a new MRT station on the Cross Island Line. The new station is expected to occupy the area currently occupied by the rugby field and netball courts in Turf City.

Turf City should not be confused with the Singapore Turf Club in Kranji, which will be closed by March 2027.
