'Please call': Polite debtor's note left at gate secured with bike lock outside Yishun flat, woman arrested

A 49-year-old woman was arrested for her suspected involvement in a case of loanshark harassment in Yishun.

The police were alerted on March 13 to the case outside a Yishun Street 11 flat, where the main gate was secured with a bicycle lock and a debtor’s note was left behind.

The bicycle lock and debtor’s note were seized as case exhibits. The note said: "Please call ... at ..."

Through follow-up investigations and with the aid of images from police cameras, officers from Woodlands Police Division established the identity of the woman and arrested her on March 21.

In a separate case, a 29-year-old man was arrested for his suspected involvement in two cases of loanshark harassment at Choa Chu Kang Street 62 and Jurong West Avenue 3.

The police were alerted on March 20 and 21 to the two cases where the main doors and gates of both flats were splashed with red paint and a debtor's note was left behind at the Choa Chu Kang flat.

Through ground enquiries and with the aid of images from police cameras, officers from Jurong Police Division and Police Operations Command Centre established the identity of the man and arrested him on March 21.

Both the woman and the man were charged in court on March 23 under the Moneylenders Act.

For first-time offenders, the offence of loanshark harassment carries a fine between $5,000 and $50,000, with imprisonment of up to five years and caning of up to six strokes.
