It is called anti-bird netting.

And "anti-bird" it may be, though perhaps not the way it is intended.

The anti-bird netting installed at a Fernvale block in Sengkang West Way is meant to keep birds away but trapped one instead.

A Stomper shared a video of a pigeon stuck on an air-conditioner ledge under the netting unable to find its way out. Another pigeon outside the net appeared to "visit" the feathered prisoner.

"On and off, birds get trapped," said the Stomper.

"Not only do the birds get frightened, this also causes problems if they find their way into the home. They poo all over the flat."

Stomp has reported issues with the netting before.

In December 2022, the Ang Mo Kio Town Council (AMKTC) told Stomp that it had received feedback from residents about pigeon roosting at the block and the accompanying hygiene concerns.

Some residents recommended the anti-bird netting as a sustainable and effective solution.

"We are also aware of the concern raised by a resident regarding the bird netting installed," said the town council.

"The netting was customised with a zip on one side to allow accessibility for aircon maintenance by residents from time to time.

"The anti-bird netting not only keeps birds away, but it also prevents unwanted litter from landing onto residents’ aircon ledge, thus minimising litter issues faced by residents.

"Should other urban bird issues arise, AMKTC will also continue engagement with residents as well as relevant stakeholders such as the Animal & Veterinary Service."
