Man found with duty-unpaid cigarettes hidden in candy tins at Singapore Cruise Centre

A 55-year-old man was fined $1,000 after being caught with 91 sticks of assorted duty-unpaid cigarettes that were hidden in metal candy tins at the Singapore Cruise Centre.

The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said that its officers became suspicious when they noticed anomalies in the scanned images of a luggage belonging to the Singaporean man.

They subsequently uncovered the cigarettes concealed in five tins, according to the ICA in a Facebook post titled 'Sweet disaster' on Thursday (Jan 15).

The case was referred to Singapore Customs and the man "paid a composition sum of $1,000 for the offence committed".

"This method of concealment is a cause for concern as similar methods may be used by people with ill intent to smuggle security items into Singapore," said the ICA, adding that it would continue to conduct security checks on passengers and vehicles so as to safeguard Singapore’s security.
