Man allegedly smothered his 77-year-old sleeping mother with pillow, intending to kill her

A 34-year-old man will be charged in court with the attempted murder of a 77-year-old woman, the police said in a statement.

According to The Straits Times, the man is believed to be the woman's son.

The police said they were alerted to a case of assault at a residential unit in Serangoon Central on Jan 18 at about 4.45pm.

Preliminary investigations revealed that on Jan 16, the man had allegedly pressed a pillow over the woman's face while she was sleeping, intending to kill her.

The man was subsequently arrested by the police in connection with the case.

The man will be charged in court on Jan 24.

If convicted of attempted murder, the man faces life imprisonment and caning. He can be also jailed for up to 20 years and fined or caned, or both.
