In response to a Stomp query, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the fire at Block 4 Tanjong Pagar Plaza at about 2:15pm.

Using a water jet, SCDF extinguished the fire, which involved contents of a bedroom in a flat on the fifth storey, where an occupant had evacuated prior to SCDF's arrival.

As a precautionary measure, the police and SCDF evacuated about 50 people from the affected premises. A resident from a neighbouring unit was taken to Singapore General Hospital.

Tanjong Pagar GRC MP Indranee Rajah shared on Facebook: "Thankfully, no one was injured although one resident was taken to receive treatment for smoke inhalation.

"The residents told me how neighours alerted each other when the fire broke out, and helped the elderly ones to get to safety on the ground floor.

"The occupants of the unit in which the fire started were not at home when it began, and therefore were not injured although they were understandably shaken.

"HDB has allocated them a temporary place to stay at a unit in another precinct. The Tanjong Pagar Plaza Traders Association also chipped in to provide them with mattresses and pillows for use in the temporary flat."

The Tanjong Pagar Town Council posted on Facebook: "A generous member of the community also bought several household necessities for the family of the affected unit and the family is now safe with temporary housing.

"Our electrical team restored the supply back to all other units and our conservancy team cleaned up the debris from the common corridor shortly after 8.30pm."
