Fire the size of football field breaks out in Tuas industrial building storing chemicals

A fire the size of a football field broke out in an industrial building storing chemicals in the early hours of Wednesday morning (July 5).

Stomper Husaini alerted Stomp to the incident and shared photos and videos of the blaze.

Thick plumes of smoke could be seen rising into the sky.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that it was alerted to a fire at 11 Tuas Link 1 at about 2.05am.

The building is occupied by Megachem, a wholesaler and distributor of speciality chemicals.

The fire had engulfed the premises which stores and distributes chemicals, the SCDF said in a statement on its Facebook page.

They did not reveal the possible cause of the fire.

A total of 30 emergency vehicles and 100 firefighters from two stations and a special rescue unit were deployed to the scene.

SCDF said that at the height of the firefighting operation, firefighters deployed five water and foam jets and two unmanned firefighting machines.

The public were advised to avoid the area

The fire was brought under control at about 6.15am and has since been extinguished. Firefighters then conducted damping down operations to prevent the fire from restarting.

One firefighter was taken conscious to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital after experiencing giddiness during the firefighting operation.

He has since been discharged and will be given time to rest.

SCDF added that they will continue to check on his well-being.

According to The Straits Times, train services between Tuas Link and Tuas West Road stations on the East-West MRT line were suspended for nearly two hours.

They resumed at around 7.20am.
