Chingay 2024 logo background colour 'adjusted' after feedback: 'Black is inauspicious! It's for funerals'

It is not even Christmas yet and we are talking about Chingay already?

Yes, we are.

Chinese New Year will be on Feb 10, 2024, and the People's Association is organising the Chingay Parade on Feb 23 and 24 at the F1 Pit Building.

But even though Chingay is still more than two months away, there are already complaints.

On Dec 6 morning, the Chingay Parade SG Facebook page updated its profile pic to its new "Chingay 2024 Blossom" logo.

Unfortunately – or rather, inauspiciously – the background colour for the logo was a little too dark for Stomper Steven's liking.

"Please take a look at Chingay's logo for 2024," said the Stomper.

"The background is so inauspicious. Black is associated as a mark of respect for someone who has passed away.

"Whoever designed that has no respect whatsoever for Lunar New Year? More so by the People's Association."

The Stomper was not alone. On the Chingay Parade SG Facebook page, there were three comments decrying the choice of colour.

One netizen said: "Black is inauspicious! It’s for funerals and such!"

Another wrote: "Nearly thought someone has passed. Why use such colour for the joyful occasion?"

The Stomper himself chimed in: "Choy! Why such a solemn background? Shouldn't it be red for a joyous festive event?"

He even contacted the People's Association and received this reply the same day: "The background colour of the logo is dark blue, but the colour did not turn out well on our social media platform. We have since adjusted the colour."

Possibly due to the hue and cry, in less than seven hours after the previous update, Chingay Parade SG updated the logo to have a more red-like background colour – medium carmine, to be exact.

"Thanks to me, for sure," said the Stomper.

"Nevertheless, is that what 'dark blue' looks like?"

Actually, it is Maastricht blue.
