An HDB bedroom in a Hougang flat caught fire on Dec 29.

Stomper Watson shared a video of smoke rising from the 10th-storey corridor of the block with a fire engine parked below.

In response to a Stomp query, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted at about 11.15am to the fire at Block 552 Hougang Street 51.

An occupant from the flat evacuated before SCDF’s arrival. The police evacuated about 20 residents from the block as a precautionary measure.

Renovation contractor Alex Lim told The Straits Times he was working in a flat on the 11th storey at around 10am when he decided to step out after detecting a burning smell.

Confronted with the sight of smoke billowing upwards, he rushed to alert neighbours and helped usher everyone down the stairs.

The fire, which involved the contents of a bedroom, was extinguished by SCDF using a water jet.

There were no reported injuries.
