15 people fall sick after eating food from two Spize outlets in Bedok, food safety lapses found

Spize Bedok and Spize Concepts were fined $3,600 each by the court on Nov 15 for food safety lapses.

In July last year, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) received reports of gastroenteritis involving 15 persons after consuming food prepared by Spize’s food establishments at Bedok Road.

None of them were hospitalised.

A joint investigation by the Ministry of Health (MOH) and SFA found multiple food safety lapses at the western food stall located at 336/338 Bedok Road, licensed under Spize Bedok.

The lapses include improper segregation of raw and cooked food at the serving station and the use of a stained chopping board for cooked food.

At 284 Bedok Road, licensed under Spize Concepts, food safety lapses found included the failure to provide hand soap in the kitchen toilet and the unauthorised use of the premises for food processing.

In the interest of public health, SFA directed Spize Bedok and Spize Concepts to rectify the lapses and take necessary measures to improve the food safety practices and the cleanliness of its premises.

SFA also adjusted the food hygiene grades of the two food outlets from “A” to “C”.

In November 2018, a 38-year-old man died after being one of more than 60 people who fell sick from eating bento meals prepared by Spize’s River Valley outlet.

Spize was fined and the outlet was shut down.
