Forget the durian. We have a new king of fruit in Singapore.

Or should it be "president" of fruit?

After all, the pineapple was the campaign logo for our new president-elect, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam.

A bar called Soi 44 in Prinsep Street is giving away a free pineapple soju in a 1½-litre tower worth $48 to customers wearing anything related to pineapples this weekend (Sept 2 to 3).

It can be a pineapple costume or simply a T-shirt with the thorny fruit on it.

"Amaze us with your creativity, and there might be further surprises," said Soi 44 on Facebook.

"Only valid when you flash this post to our staff before ordering. Repeated redemptions not allowed."

This woman should go.

The bar added cheekily in the comments: "AND…If you manage to get President Tharman Shanmugaratnam to come with you, unlimited free flow pineapple soju on the house for everyone in pineapple!"

Soi 44 told Stomp: "We hope this promotion would help to gather Singaporeans together as he embarks on his term as President.

Mr Tharman won the presidential election on Friday (Sept 1) with 70.4 per cent of the votes, beating Mr Ng Kok Song (15.72 per cent) and Mr Tan Kin Lian (13.88 per cent).

But why the pineapple?

Mr Tharman explained on Facebook on Aug 22: "The pineapple was an easy choice as my campaign logo.

"Tastes great, and loved by everyone. What is more unifying in Singapore than the humble pineapple tart - looked forward to during Malay festivities, and virtually all others?

"For the Chinese, the pineapple is a symbol of luck and prosperity. I’m told 'ong lai' in Hokkien ('huang li' in Mandarin) sounds the same as 'good fortune comes'. Families roll a pineapple into a new home for that reason. It seems to have rubbed off on some others in Singapore – one of my good Indian friends did likewise recently.

"And for those who really want to know, the pineapple contains high levels of Vitamin C and thiamine, which promotes happy hormones."
