Foreign worker arrested after leaving bags unattended at Aljunied MRT Station -- on his first day in S'pore

A 27-year-old man foreign worker, was arrested on his first day here in Singapore after leaving his bags unattended at Aljunied MRT Station — to go for breakfast. 

The man was arrested for offence of Public Nuisance on Friday (Jun 16) at around 10am, reports Shin Min Daily News via Lianhe Zaobao

The police has released a press release on the incident, citing:

“On Jun 16, 2017, at 10.04am, the Police were alerted to a case of unattended bags at Aljunied MRT Station.

“With the information provided by SMRT staff, officers from the Bedok Police Division and Public Transport Security Command traced and detained the owner of the bags at the vicinity of Aljunied MRT Station. 

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the man had intentionally left his bags at the MRT station and proceeded to a nearby coffeeshop.

“The two bags were later established to contain personal clothing and food item.

“Police investigations are ongoing.”

They added:

“The Police treat all security threats seriously and will not hesitate to take action against anyone who intentionally cause public alarm. 

“Anyone convicted with the offence of Public Nuisance under Section 290 of the Penal Code may be punished with a fine which may extend to $1,000.

“The Police would also like to remind members of the public not to leave personal belongings unattended and to report any suspicious items or behaviour to the MRT staff or the Police immediately.”
