A man was halfway through his nasi lemak when he found a surprise ingredient -- a cockroach.

Stomper Shak told Stomp that his colleague had bought him lunch from Ah Boy Nasi Lemak at Block 216 Bedok North Street 1 on Sept 18 between 10.16 to 10.30am.

"Once I started to eat halfway through, I found a cockroach inside the nasi lemak sambal chilli," he said.

"I stopped eating and obtained phones of the rude surprise I found.

"On Sept 20, I went to the shop at 10.16am and spoke to Mr Ben and showed him the pictures.

"I asked him his thoughts and he mentioned 'QC lapse' and he is very sorry."

Shak said he reported the matter to the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) and added: 'I would just like readers and users to learn about the hygiene standards of this particular shop."

In response to a Stomp query, an SFA spokesperson said: "SFA had inspected the food establishment and did not detect any pest infestation nor food safety lapses during inspection.

"Nonetheless, SFA had reminded the licensee to observe good housekeeping and refuse management at the licensed premises.

"Food safety is a joint responsibility.

"While SFA puts in place and enforces the regulatory measures, food operators must play their part by adhering to good food hygiene and preparation practices.

"Food operators should also ensure that their premises are clean and well-maintained."

"Members of the public who come across any potentially errant food operator should report to SFA via the online feedback form.

"SFA takes a serious view towards food safety and will investigate all feedback alleging poor food safety practices.

"As part of the enquiry and gathering of evidence, SFA may engage the feedback provider for more details and will not hesitate to take enforcement action if sufficient evidence has been obtained."
