Car skids and falls into canal along PIE canal, driver's body retrieved

A 55-year-old man was found dead after his car skidded and fell into a canal along the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) in the wee hours of Monday (June 26).

The police told Stomp they were alerted to an accident involving a car along the PIE towards Tuas, at the slip road entering the Central Expressway (CTE), at 4.53am.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it found the car overturned and partially submerged in a canal near the slip road.

It deployed divers from the elite Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (DART) to conduct a search operation in the water and the driver had to be extricated from his seat.

"The body of a 55-year-old male car driver was subsequently retrieved from the canal and pronounced dead at the scene by an SCDF paramedic," police added.

A video circulating online shows emergency vehicles at the scene and police officers redirecting traffic to the leftmost lane.

Police investigations are ongoing.
