Buying toilet paper from TikTok? People have been scammed

At least six people have lost a total of at least $8,000 to a phishing scam involving TikTok since July 2, said police.

Victims would come across fake advertisements on TikTok, offering deals on items such as toilet paper rolls.

After clicking on the URL link embedded in the fake advertisements, the victims would be directed to a phishing site, where they would be required to key in their credit card details and One-Time Passwords (OTPs) to make the purchase.

The victims would only realise that they have been scammed when they discovered unauthorised transactions made from their credit cards.

The police shared screenshots of the fake ads which use the Million Parcel logo.

Million Parcel, a company that provides packaging for online sellers, posted a scam alert on July 3.

The company said: "It has come to our attention that some unscrupulous individuals are using our product and logo to conduct fraudulent activities. We would like to alert you to this scam and ensure the safety of our loyal buyers."

The police advise adopting the following precautionary measures:

  1. ADD - Scamshield App and security features, such as two-factor (2FA) or multifactor authentication for banks.
  2. CHECK - for scam signs with official sources and be wary of URL links provided in unsolicited advertisements, especially those related to deals that are too good to be true. Double check if the amount charged to your credit card is correct and on the purpose of the transaction. Do not provide your OTP if the amount charged to your card is incorrect and/or if the purpose of the transaction is not related to the purchase.
  3. TELL - authorities, family, and friends about this scam so they do not fall for it. Report any fraudulent transactions to your bank immediately and report the fraudulent advertisements to TikTok.
