A boy had his shoe caught in an escalator at Newton MRT station on Jan 2.

Stomper Ryan said the incident occurred at the "Downtown Line side" at around 9.15pm.

The escalator, which was going upwards to the "North-South Line side, "suddenly stopped" after the boy's sandal got stuck on the last step, Ryan added.

According to Ryan, the boy looked to be around eight to 12 years old.

The Stomper, who shared a video of the incident, added: "His sandal was stuck on the last step of the escalator, but luckily there were no injuries.

"The escalator shut down automatically, but I left before help arrived.

"Be cautious always, Stompers."

Mrs Grace Wu, spokeswoman for SBS Transit, told Stomp that staff at the station's Downtown Line were alerted by an alarm to an escalator that had tripped at about 9.26pm.

She said: "They responded quickly with an on-site inspection but found nothing amiss. No one had also reported to the staff about any incident at the escalator, which was put back into service after no abnormalities were found.

"Viewing the CCTV footage, we note that a boy's footwear was stuck on the escalator which then came to a stop."

According to Mrs Wu, the child did not seem to be hurt and his footwear was retrieved by a fellow commuter.

She added: "We would like to take this opportunity to remind commuters to stand within the yellow lines of the escalator steps and keep away from the sides and edges for their own safety. Commuters may also approach our staff for assistance."
