4 men arrested after selling fake phones to victims for up to $400 each

Four men, aged between 33 and 53, have been arrested for their suspected involvement in a series of cheating cases.

The police said in a statement that they received two reports on April 21 and April 25 from victims alleging that the four men had sold them counterfeit phones.

"They would approach victims to explain that they were short of cash," the police said.

They would then propose to sell various branded phones to the victims at a discounted price of between $180 to $400 per piece.

The buyers realised the phones were fake after authenticating them at authorised retailers.

Officers identified the men and arrested them separately on April 26.

Several mobile phones and accessories that are purportedly counterfeited were seized.

Their personal mobile devices were also seized for further investigations.

The offence of cheating carries a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine.

When the price is too good to be true, it probably is, the police said.

They advise members of the public to purchase only from authorised sellers or reputable sources, especially for high-value items, adding: "The police take a serious view against any person who may be involved in scams and frauds, and perpetrators will be dealt with in accordance with the law."
