Man spots rare deer roaming around Gali Batu Depot in Woodlands

A man was surprised to see a wild sambar deer roaming around the Gali Batu Depot in Woodlands on Wednesday morning (Aug 31).

Stomper Habib shared with Stomp photos of the rare animal he took at about 7am.

"I took my company's transport to work there," said Habib.

"When I got down from the lorry, I suddenly saw a deer come out from the jungle and walk slowly over the road.

"It wasn't scared of us."

Habib told Stomp that this was the first time he has ever seen a deer in the area.

"But every day, I see a group of wild boars there."

Stomp earlier reported on a sambar deer that was killed after getting hit by a car along the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE).

Sambar deer sightings are rare because these creatures are very shy and are most active at dusk and at night.

In the day, they rest in thick vegetation, making it difficult to spot them.

The sambar (Rusa unicolor) deer is one of the largest deer species in the world, after the moose and the elk. 

They are classified as a vulnerable species.
