A 19-year-old teenager was arrested on March 18 for allegedly cheating a 26-year-old man of $200.
The police said they received a report on March 8, at about 1.05am, in which the male victim had been conned by the 'sister' of a friend he befriended online.
Through follow-up investigations, officers from Bedok Police Division established the teenager's identity and arrested her.
A total of $190 was recovered from the teenager.
"Preliminary investigations revealed that the teenager used a fictitious online persona and allegedly offered sexual services to the victim," police said.
"The teenager later used a second fictitious online persona to pose as the first persona's 'sister' and asked the victim to transfer $200 to her or she would expose the victim’s conversation to the police."
The teenager will be charged in court on March 19 with cheating, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine.
Members of the public are advised to adopt the following measures to avoid falling victim to such cases:
- Do not receive/send money from/to people you do not know well, especially if you have not met the person; and
- Inform the police if anyone tries to extort money from you.
