Huge surprise for SMRT cabby as woman gives birth in taxi during trip to hospital

SMRT taxi driver Mr Mohamad Nazaruddin had just picked up his first passengers of the day and was delivering them to the hospital. Little did he know that someone else was waiting to be delivered – the couple’s baby.

According to the story shared by SMRT on its Facebook page yesterday (Jan 31), Mr and Mrs Hamid were on their way to the hospital on Monday afternoon (Jan 30) for a checkup when Mrs Hamid started experiencing pain.

Upon noticing her discomfort, the 39-year-old driver took a detour to drive the couple to the nearest hospital. However, they could not arrive in time, and the baby was delivered in his taxi.

Throughout the journey, Mr Mohamad remained calm and advised Mr Hamid on what he had to do to ensure the baby was fine.

Nurses came to the aid of the couple and their baby when they arrived at the hospital and Mr Mohamad waived the couple’s taxi fare.

Describing the whole experience as ‘unforgettable’ and ‘remarkable’, Mrs Hamid said, “I feel shocked and also overjoyed that my baby girl was born in a taxi.”

“My husband and I would like to thank Mr Mohamad for doing a good job to take care of our baby and reassure us that the baby is fine. It was very well done," she added.

Mr Mohamad said, “I’m lost for words. I’m glad that I’m able to help them in terms of giving them advice on what to do with the baby and ensuring that the baby is safe.

“I feel great about being part of this amazing journey with the parents. I hope that the family will be happy and joyous and wish them all the best."

To highlight his good deed, SMRT said on their Facebook page that it would waive Mr Mohamad’s taxi rental for a day.
