Woman to be charged for cheating 8 people out of $27,000 in rental scams

A woman, 31, who allegedly cheated eight people of $27,000 in a series of rental scams will be charged in court on Friday (June 3).

On Thursday (June 2), the police received a report from a victim who said she was duped into renting a unit in Yishun by the woman and was cheated out of $5,400.

The victim had responded to online advertisements posted by the woman to rent a place. After the victim paid the deposit via bank transfer, the woman purportedly became uncontactable.

Through extensive ground enquiries and follow-up investigations, officers from Woodlands Police Division arrested the woman within 24 hours in the vicinity of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4.

Preliminary investigations revealed that she had allegedly deceived seven others with the total reported losses amounting to at least $27,000.

The woman will be charged with cheating, which carries an imprisonment term of up to 10 years and a fine.
