Woman fined $2,500 for abandoning pet cat at Canberra Road

A 23-year-old woman was fined $2,500 in court on Jun 21 for one count of pet abandonment.

In statement, the AVA said that they were alerted to a case of pet abandonment at Canberra Road.

A pet cat was found by a member of the public and a carrier with the accused’s details was found near the cat.

AVA investigated immediately and upon questioning, the accused admitted to abandoning her cat after a family conflict. 

The cat was cared for by a fosterer during  investigations and has been successfully rehomed with the help of an animal welfare group, which is one of AVA’s rehoming partners.

The AVA has reiterated that they take a stern view on pet abandonment. 

All feedback on pet abandonment and will be investigated and enforcement action will be taken where necessary. 

Individuals who abandon their pets are liable to a maximum fine of $10,000 and/or 12 months jail term for first convictions.
