Unlicensed driver who drove illegally rented car and caused fatal accident gets reformative training

A youth who was 17 years old when he drove without a licence and caused an accident that resulted in the death of a woman has been sentenced to reformative training.

Ong Han You, now 20, will also be banned from driving for eight years upon his release, reported Shin Min Daily News.

The fatal accident occurred at the junction of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5 and Ang Mo Kio Industrial Park 2 on May 21, 2016, at around 7.56am.

Ong was driving his then 15-year-old girlfriend home in a car which he had illegally rented using an Identification Card (IC) that he picked up months earlier.

He had a forceful collision with a motorcycle after losing control of his car, before crashing into a taxi that was carrying two passengers.

The motorcyclist, Mr Lim Meng Peng, 55, and his pillion rider, Ms Lau Lee Kiaw, 45, were flung off their bike in the accident.

Despite seeing Ms Lau on the grass, Ong abandoned his car and left the scene with his girlfriend by flagging down a taxi, only surrendering himself to the police later that day.

Ms Lau, a factory supervisor and single mother, sustained blunt force injuries to her chest and died at around 9.30am.

Her boyfriend, Mr Lim, suffered fractures in his spine and ankle.

Ms Lau's oldest sister told The New Paper in 2016 that Mr Lim "couldn't stop crying and blamed himself."

"He said that he should have died in her place because she has two children to take care of," she was quoted as saying.

The 50-year-old taxi driver, Ms Liau Siok Choo, suffered from acute stress reaction and pain in her right arm and neck.

Ong and his girlfriend were not injured, reported The Straits Times.

The accused had pleaded guilty on Aug 13 this year to three charges including cheating, negligent driving causing death and failure to render assistance after the accident.

Five other similar charges were taken into consideration during sentencing.
