Jurong-Clementi Town Council has responded following a resident's complaint that he saw a rat above a chicken rice stall at Yuhua Hawker Centre on Sep 13 at 8.30pm.

A Stomper informed Stomp about the incident and sent a video of what he saw.

In the video, a rat can be seen running above the hawker stall's signage.

"I believe that the people running the hawker stalls and the cleaners at this hawker centre should know about this," the Stomper said.

"This rat does not look very small. In fact, it looks like a mummy rat which may give birth to more rats next time."

In response to a Stomp query, a spokesman for Jurong-Clementi Town Council said: "The town council is mindful that markets and hawker centres generate food waste and may attract pests.

"Hence we have a rat attack programme in place at the market and hawker centre at Blk 347 Jurong East Avenue 1.

"This involves the systematic inspection of common areas for signs of rat activities and burrows and carry out night culling activities.

"As part of our cleaning programme, we also carry out spring cleaning of the market and hawker centre once every three months.

"Following the report, we have also made a check immediately of the environment surrounding the hawker centre.

"We have engaged the local community, the hawker's association, and the National Environmental Agency (NEA) to help us remind the stall owners as well as table cleaners to ensure proper disposal of leftover food to keep the rodent population under control."
