Teen who posted naked photos online of female cousin while she was showering given probation

A teenager was sentenced to a year and nine month's probation on Wednesday (Sep 12) after pleading guilty in August to one count each of insulting his female cousin's modesty and transmitting obscene materials.

The 19-year-old, who cannot be named due to a gag order to protect his 17-year-old cousin's identity, posted two videos and eight photos of the girl when she was naked in the shower on content-sharing site Tumblr, reports The Straits Times.

He even included captions with her name and the school she attended.

The court heard that he had done it to get back at his cousin for mocking and embarrassing him in front of his family and friends.

He became unhappy with her in December 2016 and on June 18 last year, he went to her home and placed his mobile phone underneath a bathroom window to record images of her showering.

When the girl spotted the phone, she did not find it suspicious and simply returned it to him.

He uploaded the videos and photos on Sep 3 last year.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Dora Tay said: "He wanted the victim to experience the same feeling of embarrassment that he had felt."

The girl was alerted to the images nine days later when a netizen located her online via social app Snapchat and informed her about them.

When she realised they had been taken in her home she remembered finding her cousin's mobile phone in the bathroom earlier that year.

The girl's brother confronted their cousin who admitted to the offences before removing the images and deleting his online accounts.

She reported this to the police the following day.

The offender was also ordered to perform 150 hours of community service and his mother was bonded for $5,000 to ensure his good behaviour.

He was also banned from possessing and using any image-capturing devices unless approved by his probation officer.

For insulting his cousin's modesty, he could have been jailed for up to a year and fined.
