A section of the Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE) was closed for around two hours yesterday (Jan 16) after a water pipe burst in the tunnel.

Several Stompers alerted Stomp to the incident and forwarded photos from the scene that were circulating online.

"The rain is over -- but not in the MCE," joked Stomper Ah Boy.

The photos showed drivers driving in a downpour inside the tunnel.

A Land Transport Authority (LTA) spokesman told The Straits Times that a section of the eastbound MCE tunnel between Central Boulevard Exit and the Marina Boulevard entrance was temporarily closed to traffic due to a burst water pipe at about 9.10pm.

The tunnel reopened at 11.25pm.

LTA said it is investigating the cause of the incident.

This is not the first time an incident like this has happened.

In May last year, vehicles received a "free car wash" in the MCE tunnel after a water-based fire-fighting system was accidentally activated.
