Resident lauded for detaining man after seeing him place debtor's note outside flat on CCTV

A resident saw a man place a debtor’s note at his neighbour's flat and detained the man until police arrived.

For his good deed, Mr Jeremy Tan Ding Hui was commended for his public spiritedness in a ceremony held at Woodlands Police Division on Friday (Oct 7).

On Sept 14 at 10.40pm, Mr Tan saw through his CCTV a man loitering outside his neighbour’s unit where he purportedly placed a debtor’s note. The man had also allegedly placed a debtor’s note at his unit.

Mr Tan contacted the police and went to look for the man. Mr Tan spotted the man at the void deck and detained him until the arrival of the police.

The man was subsequently arrested for his suspected involvement in a case of unlicensed moneylending harassment.

Mr Tan was presented the Public Spiritedness Award by Commander of Woodlands Police Division Ang Eng Seng at the ceremony.

"This is in recognition of his invaluable contribution which led to the arrest of a man for unlicensed moneylending harassment. Mr Tan played an important role in the arrest and his selflessness and public-spiritedness are commendable," said the Assistant Commissioner of Police.

"His actions are an example of how members of the public can step up to assist the police. We hope that his act will serve to inspire others to keep the community safe.”
