A huge fire that broke out along Geylang Road in the wee hours of Sunday (March 17) saw a row of seven shophouse units engulfed in flames.

Stomper Jasmin sent to Stomp videos of the blaze, which several people can be seen filming while standing behind a police cordon.

Similarly, photos taken by Stomper Sunny show how a crowd had gathered at the scene.

In a series of posts on Facebook, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the fire along 643 Geylang Road at around 1.10am and deployed resources around the affected area to contain it.

"Due to the structure of the shophouse units which share a common roof, as well as the high density of furniture and other combustible materials stored in some of the units, the fire had spread quickly from unit to unit," it added.

A total of seven shophouse units were on fire, with five of them "fully engulfed in flames".

According to the SCDF, 17 emergency vehicles and about 60 firefighters were deployed to mitigate the fire.

It said: "At the height of operations, nine handheld jets and water monitors from the aerial appliances were used to bring the fire under control."

The fire was extinguished in around three hours.

There were no reported injuries.

Photos contributed by Stompers Oliver and Joker show thick smoke at the scene while SCDF operations were ongoing.

Damping down operations, which refer to the application of water to wet burnt surfaces to prevent any potential rekindling of the fire, were also conducted by the SCDF.
