Man who tried to rob female store employee, 78, with penknife arrested less than 5 hours later

A 28-year-old man was arrested for his suspected involvement in a case of attempted armed robbery along Tyrwhitt Road yesterday (March 28).

The police had received a report at around 1.46pm, about how a man had brandished a penknife at a 78-year-old woman who was manning a convenience store named Everyday Mart.

He demanded for money but the woman put up a struggle.

The suspect then fled without any money and the woman was not injured.

Upon receiving the report, officers from Central Police Division conducted extensive ground enquiries and located the man.

He was arrested along Lavender Street less than five hours later on the same day, at about 6.35pm.

The penknife was also seized as a case exhibit.

The suspect will be charged in court today (March 29) with the offence of attempted armed robbery.

If convicted, he can be jailed for between two and seven years and receive at least 12 strokes of the cane.
