Man threatened to report acquaintance to police for alleged 'illegal activities' unless he paid $10k

A 31-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday (Mar 11) for his suspected involvement in a case of attempted extortion along Bedok Rise.

The man had allegedly threatened an acquaintance that "he would report to the police of the man’s alleged involvement in illegal activities if he failed to pay a sum of $10,000."

The victim informed the police about the matter on Mar 9, at around 8pm.

Through ground enquiries, officers from Tanglin Police Division established the suspect's identity and arrested him.

The man will be charged in court on Friday (Mar 13) for attempted extortion.

If convicted, he faces a jail term of two to five years, and caning.
