Man returns bird cage worth $20k after allegedly taking it from pet shop

Police are looking into an incident in which a man allegedly took a bird cage from a pet shop and left without paying for it.

Stomper Ivy, who owns U S Pet House located at 1003A Upper Serangoon Road, said the incident occurred last Wednesday (Mar 18), at around 7.30pm.

Ivy, who was alone and tending to cashier duties at the time of the incident, told Stomp: "A man loitered outside the shop for awhile before coming in.

"I was busy doing my stuff at the counter and he came in saying that he wanted to buy a bird. I told him that we do not sell birds here.

"Within around five minutes I saw him taking my cage and walking sideways out of my shop in a secretive manner.

"I stopped him and asked why he was taking my cage. He replied that it was his cage and walked out of my shop.

"I chased after him and asked him to return my cage but he kept saying it was his and pushed me away.

"I panicked and quickly ran to my husband who was washing his car at the carpark behind.

"It was too sudden so I did not know how to react or scream for help.

"From the videos, you can see that the man was initially empty-handed but walked out of the shop with my cage."

According to Ivy, the cage is adorned with a set of ivory from her husband's antique collection that is worth around $20,000.

The Stomper said that her shop has been here for over 20 years.

She added: "My husband and I are aged 62 and 56. Most of the people here know us well.

"Please kindly help us to find that guy and return our cage as the antique collection means a lot to my husband."

In response to a Stomp query, the police confirmed that a report was lodged and are looking into the matter.
