Man arrested after snatching gold chain from victim in Bedok: He tried to hide his face from CCTV cameras with umbrella

A 59-year-old man has been arrested for his suspected involvement in a case of snatch theft at Bedok North Street 3.

The police said in a statement that they were alerted to the incident on Monday (Oct 24) at about 5.16pm.

The victim's gold chain with a gold pendant worth $450 was allegedly snatched by an unknown man.

Officers established the identity of the man and arrested him on the same day, within six hours of the crime being reported.

"This was despite the man's attempt to shield his face from being captured on CCTV by using an umbrella while fleeing," the police said.

The umbrella and a set of clothes worn by the man while committing the crime were seized as case exhibits.

The gold chain belonging to the victim was also recovered.

The man will be charged in court on Wednesday (Oct 26) with the offence of snatch theft which carries a jail term of between one and seven years, and caning.

"The police will not tolerate such brazen acts of crime and will spare no effort to apprehend such offenders and deal with them in accordance with the law," the statement said.
