A 32-year-old man was arrested after locking himself in his flat on the 15th storey of Block 859 Jurong West Street 51 on Wednesday afternoon (Oct 24).

Stomper Javan shared photos of the incident that his classmates had taken and said: "Apparently firefighters rappelled down and into the house from the open windows."

In response to a Stomp query, the police said they were alerted to a case where a 32-year-old man had locked himself in a residential unit at the location at 11.32am.

The man was arrested for attempted suicide.

According to Shin Min Daily News, the man had a scheduled medical appointment but did not want to go. He became agitated and locked himself in instead.

Left with no choice, his family called the police.

However, the man refused to open the door. As such, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) lowered a safety net to the 14th floor of the block.

Stomp understands that a safety life air pack was also set up at the foot of the block as a safety precaution.

After five hours of tension, the man finally agreed to open the door. He was taken to an ambulance on a stretcher, reported Shin Min.

Police investigations are ongoing.
