Man arrested after being caught on video taking items from Lengkok Bahru home

A 48-year-old man was arrested after he was caught on video taking items from a unit at Block 55 Lengkok Bahru.

The police said that cash and a mobile phone were reported stolen.

A video of the incident was posted on SG Chinese Community Club's Facebook page. According to the post, the incident happened on Jan 17 at about 5.30pm.

The 10-minute-long footage was taken from what appeared to be a hidden camera situated in the unit.

A man is seen entering the home at the 1:38 mark, making sure to shut the door and to close the window shutters shortly after.

He is seen looking around the living room before entering a bedroom at the 2:04 mark.

After about 2 minutes and 20 seconds, he exits the room and enters the living room again.

He exits the frame at the 5:00 mark and comes back about 55 seconds later with what looks to be an ang bao in his hand.

He empties the envelope and puts its contents in his pockets before reaching for another one that is situated on the table.

At the 6:18 mark he unwittingly finds himself facing the camera but does not appear to realise it is there.

He continues to search the living room and moves the television and sofa around before finally leaving the home at the 10:25 mark.

In response to a Stomp media query, the police said they were alerted to a case of housebreaking at the mentioned unit on Jan 19 at about 8.25pm.

Through ground enquiries and with the aid of CCTV footage, officers from Clementi Police Division established the identity of the man and subsequently arrested him on Tuesday (Jan 22).

He will be charged in court on Wednesday (Jan 23) for housebreaking and theft by day. The offence is punishable with up to 10 years' jail time.
