Man, 65, arrested for allegedly snatching woman's gold necklace at Commonwealth Ave

A 65-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday (Oct 16) for allegedly snatching a woman's gold necklace along Commonwealth Avenue.

The police said they were alerted to the case on Monday (Oct 14), at around 12.35pm.

Through ground enquiries and with the aid of CCTV footages, officers from Clementi Police Division established the suspect's identity and arrested him.

He will be charged in court on Friday (Oct 18) with snatch theft, which is punishable by a jail term of one to seven years, and caning.

The police also advise members of the public to adopt the following crime prevention measures against snatch theft:

  • Always be alert and attentive to your surroundings. If you suspect that you are being followed, remain calm and proceed to a more crowded area or call the police to seek help;

  • Avoid wearing excessive jewellery or carrying large sums of cash;

  • Avoid placing your wallet in your back pocket. If you are carrying a handbag, sling it in front of you and ensure that it is fastened or zipped at all times; and

  • When on the streets, carry your handbag on the side that is away from moving traffic.
