Stomper Zoologist was driving along Nanyang Crescent near Nanyang Technological University on Tuesday morning (Aug 21) when he spotted a lone wild boar roaming near a forested area.

The Stomper shared a photo of the boar with Stomp and noted that the boar looked "well fed".

"It was seen rummaging near a grass slope across the road from a hall of residence, " the Stomper said.

"Obviously it was searching for durians which had dropped from the trees.

"At other times when food is scarce, the wild boars would look for tapioca, yam and sweet potatoes.

"They seem to know where to look for food."

The Stomper said that when he approached the animal, it made a fast retreat into the forest.

"The wild boar population in Singapore seems to be dwindling as more forests are cleared for roads and flyovers," he said.

"Previously, I used to see wild boars at Bukit Brown Cemetery but recently, when I went there I did not see a single one.

"Urbanisation has depleted the habitats of these animals and one day they might become extinct."

Last month, Stomp reported on a lone wild boar that had been spotted roaming around Yew Tee HDB estate.

The boar appeared comfortable around humans, indicating that it was being fed by people.

The Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) issued a public advisory to those who come into contact with wild boars:

  • AVA advises the public not to approach, disturb, feed or try to catch any wildlife. We urge the public to keep a safe distance from all wild boars and avoid confronting or cornering the animals. Do not interact with the animal, and ensure that young children and pets are kept away as they may be curious and approach it.

  • The public can refer to the advisory on wild boars on AVA’s website and contact us at 1800 476 1600 to provide feedback or request for assistance.
