Healthcare workers get free pizza on Bitcon Pizza Day

Frontliners at three hospitals were gifted free pizzas on Bitcoin Pizza Day, which fell on May 22.

Cryptocurrency exchange Gemini sent over boxes of Canadian Pizza to healthcare workers at Changi General Hospital, Tan Tock Seng Hospital and Singapore General Hospital to thank them for tirelessly serving and supporting the Singapore population during the pandemic.

A spokesman from the company explained that Bitcoin Pizza Day came to be after programmer Laszlo Hanyecz traded 10,000 bitcoins for two Papa John's pizzas on this day in 2010. This date is now celebrated in the crypto calendar.

Mr Jeremy Ng, the Asia-Pacific managing director of Gemini, said: "The ethos behind Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies is about empowering the individuals and we’re happy that on this special day we can give back to the people who need it most during this time."
