Engineer who caused motorcyclist's death gets 10 days' jail and 5-year ban

A 69-year-old engineer was sentenced on Friday (Sep 8) to 10 days' jail and banned from driving fo five years after causing the death of a 19-year-old motorcyclist along New Upper Changi Road on May 15 last year.

S.N. Vasutavan admitted to causing the death of Muhammad Arafat Baharudin by doing a negligent act.

The incident was caught on camera where Vasutavan was seen making an unauthorised left turn from the centre lane of New Upper Changi Road into a side road.

The act resulted in a collision with Muhammad Arafat who subsequently died from multiple injuries.

The charge said Vasutavan failed to keep a proper lookout for other road users while making a left turn into the side road leading to the carpark of Block 208B, New Upper Changi Road, resulting in the collision, reports The Straits Times.
