Discarded items on fire at Ang Mo Kio block: 25-year-old man arrested

A 25-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday (July 2) in relation to a fire involving discarded items that broke out at Block 473 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10.

It was earlier reported by Stomp that the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) had responded to a call on June 30, at around 3.45am.

A spokesman told Stomp: "Discarded items on fire were found at the void deck and Level 7 staircase landing. The fire was put out by members of the public prior to SCDF's arrival."

Stomper BC, a resident at the block, also shared several photos showing charred remains at the staircase landing.

He said: "On Monday, I saw police officers going around to ask residents if they had seen someone from CCTV footage, which I believe might be connected to the fire."

In a statement on Tuesday, the police said they had received a report about a man who allegedly set fire to discarded items at the block.

Through follow-up investigations, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division established the man's identity and arrested him.

The suspect will be charged in court on Wednesday (July 3) with mischief by fire.

If convicted, he faces a jail term of up to seven years and a fine.
